Greek Immigration in the 20th Century

Greek immigration has changed America in the past century. Most of those immigrants came from Lacona, and mostly Sparta in Southern Greece. There were also many push and pull factors. Some push factors was that there was loss of homeland, unemployment, high prices, and economic devastation because of World War 1. Other pull factors were that the U.S economy had many jobs to offer for unskilled people that most immigrants would take up. An example of a job would be like working in a industrialized factory. Most Greek immigrants would settle into the 2nd and 3rd avenues of New York. There was about 300,000 immigrants coming from Greece in the first World War. In 1930, there were 303,751 Greeks living in America. There wasa over 50,00 in Chicago, 35,000 in New York, and they also settled in Detroit, Boston, and St. Louis. Since 1820-1978, over 655,000 from Greece have come over.
